HOOK CLEAN

Exercise extreme caution when cleaning dairy and food-

processing equipment in enclosed spaces as carbon monoxide

gas can cause death if inhaled.

Special mixing instructions:

Avoid adding this product to acids because a rapid temperature

increase will occur that can result in a violent eruption and

produce dangerous boiling and spattering.

8 EXPOSURE CONTROLS / PERSONAL PROTECTION

Exposure Standards: None assigned for product.

Australian TLV for sodium hydroxide = C2.00 mg/cu.m TWA

[Source: Safe Work Australia HSIS (2014)]

Engineering Controls: Mechanical ventilation: Not normally

required but should be considered if needed to keep

environmental concentrations below the permissible exposure

level..

Personal Protection:

Clothing – Use impervious clothing

Gloves – Impervious natural rubber, butyl rubber, nitrile or

PVC gloves should be worn.

Note: Resistance of glove materials can vary. Evaluate

resistance under conditions of use and maintain PPE

carefully.

Eye-protection - A full faceshield should be worn. An eyewash

and safety shower facility should be available.

10 STABILITY AND REACTIVITY

Stable.

Do not store in aluminium or galvanised containers. Store away

from acids. Hook Clean is a caustic product which attacks soft

metals like aluminium, zinc and copper.

Hazardous polymerization: None.

Materials to avoid:

Contact with water, acids, flammable liquids and organic

halogen compounds, especially trichloroethylene, may cause

fires and explosions. Contact with metals such as aluminium,

tin, zinc and alloys containing these metals produces flammable

hydrogen gas.

11 TOXICOLOGICAL INFORMATION

Health Effects:

Acute –

Considered to be toxic by all exposure

routes.

Swallowed:

Can kill if swallowed. Because of its high alkalinity

in the undiluted state, Hook Clean is corrosive to the gastro-

intestinal tract if swallowed. May cause severe scarring of the

throat.

Eye:

Corrosive to the eyes on contact. Contamination of the

eyes can result in conjunctivitis and corneal burns and

ulceration which can result in permanent injury and possible

loss of sight. Contact lenses should not be worn when working

with this chemical.

Skin:

Principal route of exposure is usually by skin contact.

Corrosive to the skin on contact. Skin contact may cause

swelling, redness, blistering, dermatitis or burns with deep

ulceration and gelatinous necrotic areas at the site of contact.

Skin contact may result in little pain, thus care should be taken

to avoid contamination of gloves and boots.

Inhalation:

Inhalation risk varies from mild irritation to

destructive burns depending on the severity of exposure.

Health Effects –

Chronic:

Chronic local contact may consist of

multiple areas of superficial destruction of the skin or of primary

irritant dermatitis. Repeated inhalation of spray or mist may

result in irritation or damage to the respiratory tract tissues and

an increased susceptibility to respiratory illness..

Toxicity Data: Not available for mixture.

For sodium hydroxide: Oral LD50 (rat) = 365 mg/kg

(sodium hydroxide solid). Sodium hydroxide has low systemic

toxicity but is highly corrosive to the eyes, mucous membranes

and skin.

(Note: this data is from published information. Agar Cleaning

Systems does not carry out animal tests).

12 ECOLOGICAL INFORMATION

Ecotoxicity: No data available.

Persistence and degradability: -

Mobility: -

Advice: Prevent entry into waterways, drains or confined areas.

13 DISPOSAL CONSIDERATIONS

For disposal, refer to State Land Waste Management Authority.

Empty containers must be decontaminated.

Small amounts of Hook Clean can be greatly diluted or carefully

neutralised with dilute acid and flushed to the sewer with

copious amounts of water.
